Phil 112 History of Philosophy: Late Modern                                Paper Topic #3

In sections 189-196 (pp. 115-119) of the Phenomenology of Spirit, Hegel argues against an asymmetrical model of self-consciousness as expressed in the Lord-Bondsman (or Master-Slave) relationship. In your paper, explain the structure and main elements of Hegel's argument as clearly as possible, noting how both the Lord and the Bondsman experience their relationship as defective. Your paper should be purely expository in nature, but should not simply paraphrase Hegel's texts (by restating, in Hegel's own words, each paragraph). Instead, a premium is placed on describing in clear philosophical prose the specific features of the model under consideration and the specific contradictions that it faces from the perspectives of both the Lord and the Bondsman. (Clarity and specificity are crucial to a successful paper.)
